National Alliance on Mental Illness - NAMI
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the largest consumer advocacy group for people with mental illness and their families. NAMI has chapters in every state and over 1100 local communities. NAMI chapters provide education, support, and advocacy, as well as supporting research. Highly recommended!
National Institute of Mental Health - NIMH
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the largest scientific organization in the world dedicated to researching causes, prevention and treatment of mental illnesses. NIMH is involved in all aspects of mental illness and mental health research, from basic science to clinical trials. Their site has good basic information resources as well as information about the latest NIMH research.
The Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC)
The Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC), founded by schizophrenia researcher and client advocate Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating barriers to psychiatric care. TAC supports research and promotes laws and policies aimed at ensuring that people with severe mental illness receive effective psychiatric care early in their illness.
The Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI)
The Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI) is a private nonprofit organization that provides grants to support research into the causes and treatment of schizophrenia. SMRI is a supporting organization of the Treatment Advocacy Center.
Mental Health America
Mental Health America, formerly known as the National Mental Health Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people live mentally healthier lives. They provide information about utilizing mental health resources, and some specific information about a wide range of psychological disorders.
