Definition: A specific type of neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that carries signals across gaps, called synapses, from one neuron to another in the brain. Most researchers believe that schizophrenia involves an imbalance in the amount of dopamine in certain regions of the brain.
Examples: Many drugs used to treat schizophrenia act by regulating the release of dopamine in specific areas of the brain.
